Most years, at the beginning of the year, I choose a word that represents my focus on intentions for the year. By March, I’ve generally forgotten what the word is, but that’s ok. It’s still a fun practice, and I think the effect lingers even after I’ve quit thinking about it.
This year, I’m part of a group that is selecting a word of the year and plans to follow up quarterly to help keep the word in mind. We’ll see if it makes a difference.
Rooted (in myself)
My word of the year is Rooted. Not in the sense of putting down roots in one place, but being rooted in myself. Being my own anchor.
If you have a word of the year, I’d love to hear it. If you want to choose one, and would like some support around how to do that, How to Choose a Word of the Year is a pretty good approach. Also, here’s an AI approach that’s not bad.

For me I would have to say my word for ‘25 would be “mindfulness “ have been in reactive mode for too long and need to live away from it

Very intriguing concept. At the end of the year, we (as humans) always seem to become more retrospective than at any other time. Indeed due to the ending of the current trip around the sun and the eventual ending and beginning of the calendar. (Which is itself just a human creation; it doesn’t actually exist in science, but I digress)
As for me, off the top of my head, this year’s word would either be ‘Medical’, or ‘Kidney’ or ‘Insurance’. Though I suppose if I were to check my navel lint more empirically, I’d come up with something more pertinent.
Checking the link to consider a word for ’25. Perhaps I can cobble together a post with the results! Happy New Year, Olivia.

Right – it’s interesting how we make this end/beginning of the year a thing. I think on a deep level we recognize the cyclical nature of life. It doesn’t matter when we decide the end/beginning are, just that we acknowledge another turning of the wheel.
When words like “Kidney,” “Medical,” and “Insurance” are pertinent, it makes sense that it might be hard to think about anything else. I’ll be sending lots of good energy your way as we move into the new year.
But if you do end up crafting a post, on word of the year, I’ll look forward to reading it!! Happy New Year, Leathers!!

I love that you engage in this tradition, my beautiful friend. 2024 was a year of intense, extreme emotion for this girl as my husband and I moved through the transplant process, lived out of state, and then moved back home just in time for the holidays. So many ups and downs, and emotional twists and turns. I am considering balance as my word for 2025. While it isn’t the sexiest word in my vocabulary, I hope it moves me towards equanimity. I am grateful for this post and for your friendship. Happy New Year, olivia ❤

Nora, I imagine 2024 was a real roller coaster for you. I think Balance is a wonderful word and it always gives me a sense of seeking. Like – standing on a see-saw or a teeter-totter, whatever you call it – in the middle, and shifting your weight from side to side, feeling it move with you. I love that you shared this – and am grateful too for our friendship. Happy New Year! 💜
